In June 2021, 5280 Magazine published its guide to the best day trips from Denver, featuring 27 Front Range adventures for Colorado residents and visitors. We were honored to see AstroTours.org, listed at the time as Elevated Astronomy Tours, included as the guide's No. 21 experience.
The feature introduced readers to our two-hour guided stargazing programs at Boulder Valley Ranch. It highlighted the chance to learn about constellations, planets, other celestial objects, and the folklore people have shared about the night sky.
That combination of science, stories, and firsthand telescope viewing remains at the heart of every AstroTour.
The 5280 guide was originally published in June 2021. Tour prices, schedules, and the objects visible in the sky change over time. Visit our current Boulder stargazing tour page for up-to-date details.

What 5280 Highlighted About AstroTours
The 5280 feature focused on what makes an AstroTour different from simply finding a dark place and looking up. Guests join a professional astronomer at Boulder Valley Ranch for a guided journey through the real night sky.
Depending on the season and conditions, a program may include:
Guided views through several telescopes
A laser-guided tour of constellations and bright stars
Planets when they are visible
Star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies
Satellites, meteors, and other passing sights
The science, history, and folklore connected to the objects overhead
Plenty of time to ask questions
The article also suggested arriving in the area early enough to explore the Boulder Valley Ranch Loop before the evening program. It is a fitting pairing: spend the daylight hours enjoying Boulder's open space, then watch a familiar landscape transform as the Sun sets and the stars emerge.
Why Stargazing Belongs on a Denver Day-Trip List
Most day trips wind down at sunset. A stargazing trip turns sunset into the beginning of the main event.
Boulder is close enough to Denver for a convenient evening escape, yet Boulder Valley Ranch offers open horizons and darker skies away from the brightest city lights. Guests can drive to the viewing area, and no nighttime hike is required. We bring the telescopes and observing equipment, so no astronomy experience or personal gear is needed.
The format works for curious beginners, experienced amateur astronomers, couples, solo travelers, families, and groups of friends. Instead of following a fixed script, our astronomers adapt each tour to the season, the Moon, the planets, the weather, and the questions guests bring with them.
That is one of the joys of live astronomy. No two nights are exactly alike.
Turn a Boulder Visit Into a Full Day and Night Adventure
A guided stargazing tour fits naturally at the end of a Boulder day trip from Denver. Visitors can spend the afternoon hiking, exploring Pearl Street, visiting a museum, or having dinner in town before heading north for the evening program.
Tours begin around sunset, with the exact start time changing throughout the year. Twilight gives everyone time to meet the astronomer, become familiar with the telescopes, and watch the first bright objects appear. As the sky darkens, the program expands into constellation finding, telescope viewing, storytelling, and conversation about the universe.
Colorado temperatures can fall quickly after sunset, even following a warm day. Dress in layers and check the current tour information before leaving. Advance booking is required, and walk-up guests cannot be accommodated.
What Can You See on a Stargazing Tour Near Denver?
The visible sky changes every night, so we never promise a fixed list of objects. That uncertainty is part of observing the real universe rather than watching a recording or planetarium simulation.
Possible sights include craters and mountains on the Moon, planets and their moons when they are above the horizon, colorful double stars, glittering star clusters, glowing nebulae, and galaxies whose light has traveled for millions of years to reach the telescope. With the unaided eye, guests may also learn to identify constellations, navigate using the stars, notice satellites crossing the sky, or catch a meteor.
Our astronomers explain not only what you are seeing, but where it is, how far away it is, and why it matters. Curiosity is the only prerequisite.
From Elevated Astronomy Tours to AstroTours.org
Readers of the original 5280 article will see the name Elevated Astronomy Tours. Today, most guests know us as AstroTours.org, but the purpose remains the same: make astronomy welcoming, hands-on, and understandable.
Since that 2021 feature, AstroTours has continued sharing Colorado's night sky through public programs near Boulder, private experiences, school visits, weddings, corporate events, resort programs, and community star parties. Every format is built around real telescopes, knowledgeable astronomers, and the wonder of seeing ancient light with your own eyes.
We are grateful to 5280 Magazine and writer Nicholas Hunt for including AstroTours in a collection of memorable Front Range experiences. Being named one of the best day trips from Denver helped introduce more people to a simple idea we still believe deeply: Colorado's outdoor adventures should not end when the Sun goes down.
