What to Expect

From the moment the sun sets over the Rockies, you’ll be immersed in a hands-on, educational stargazing experience. Our expert astronomer guide will lead you on a journey through the night sky using several large telescopes and a green laser pointer to identify constellations, planets, and other celestial objects.

Depending on the night and season, you may see the Moon’s craters, planets such as Jupiter or Saturn, distant star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies millions of light-years away. Along the way, you’ll hear stories and folklore about the stars, learn how to navigate the night sky, and even have the opportunity to operate a telescope yourself.

Questions are welcome throughout the program. We encourage curiosity and make every tour interactive and engaging.

We provide everything you need for a comfortable night under the stars, and no previous astronomy experience is required. Expect a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where you can settle into a provided camp chair, gaze through the telescopes, and enjoy Boulder’s night sky.

Who It’s For

Our Boulder astronomy tour is designed for everyone, including families with kids, couples looking for a memorable night out, solo travelers, groups of friends, science enthusiasts, amateur astronomers, and complete beginners.

The program is appropriate for all ages, although we generally recommend it for children around age 5 and older. Because the tour takes place after dark and can run late, younger children sometimes sleep through part of the experience.

We tailor our storytelling and explanations to the group, so both first-time stargazers and experienced astronomy enthusiasts can enjoy the program.

Accessibility & Safety

No hiking is required. The viewing site is located at a flat, easily accessible trailhead just outside Boulder. Guests can drive directly to the meeting area and park nearby.

We accommodate a wide range of mobility needs. If you or someone in your group uses a wheelchair or has other accessibility requirements, please let us know in advance so we can prepare an accessible telescope setup.

Camp chairs are provided so guests can sit comfortably during the astronomy talk and sky tour. A step stool is available for smaller guests, and our team can adjust telescope height and position when possible to help everyone get a good view.

Safety and comfort are priorities. We monitor weather conditions closely and only operate when conditions are suitable for the program. If cloud cover or other weather makes the tour impractical, we will work with you to reschedule or provide a refund in accordance with our weather policy.

We provide red LED flashlights to help preserve night vision. We ask guests to avoid white-light flashlights and bright phone screens during observing whenever possible.

A basic restroom with a pit toilet is available at the trailhead. Hand sanitizer and wipes are also provided.

What to wear: Colorado temperatures can drop quickly after sunset, even during summer. Dress in layers and bring warmer clothing than you think you’ll need. We also provide blankets and, on especially cold nights, hand warmers.

Sunset Meetup

Tours typically begin around sunset, with the exact start time changing throughout the year.

You’ll meet your astronomer guide at our designated open-space viewing site as the sky transitions from day to night. Depending on the season, you may also get to enjoy sunset over the nearby mountains before the astronomy program begins.

Introduction & Twilight Viewing

We begin with a welcome and brief orientation to the night’s program and equipment.

As twilight fades, we’ll introduce you to the telescopes and begin observing some of the first objects visible in the evening sky. Depending on the date, this might include the Moon, a bright planet, or one of the first stars of the evening.

This is also a good opportunity to ask questions and become familiar with the equipment.

Laser-Guided Star Tour

Once the sky darkens, your guide will lead an interactive laser-guided tour of the night sky.

You’ll learn how to identify major constellations, locate the North Star, understand how people have navigated using the stars, and hear some of the stories and mythology associated with the constellations.

Depending on the season and conditions, we may also point out planets, the Milky Way, satellites passing overhead, and occasional meteors.

Telescope Exploration

A major part of the experience is observing through our telescopes.

Throughout the evening, we’ll select a variety of objects that are well positioned for viewing. Depending on the season, these may include Saturn’s rings, Jupiter and its moons, the Moon’s craters, colorful stars, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies.

Everyone will have opportunities to observe through the telescopes, ask questions, and learn what they are seeing.

We may also show you how the telescopes work and, when appropriate, give interested guests the opportunity to help aim or operate one.

Q&A and Wrap-Up

We finish with time for questions, although questions are encouraged throughout the entire program.

After the main tour concludes, guests are often welcome to stay briefly while we begin packing up equipment. It can be a great opportunity for one last look through a telescope or a final astronomy question before heading home.

We bring several types of telescopes so guests can experience different ways of observing the night sky. Depending on the program, you may look through a large Dobsonian reflector, a computerized telescope, or other astronomical equipment.

We also bring tools and visual aids that help make astronomy easier to understand, including:

• Camp chairs

• Blankets

• Star maps and educational visual aids

• Astronomy demonstrations and props

• Snacks and bottled water

• Hand warmers when needed

• Step stool for smaller guests

You may even have the opportunity to hold a real meteorite or explore a demonstration showing the scale and distances of our solar system.

All you really need to bring is your curiosity and clothing appropriate for the weather.

Location & Directions

Our Boulder stargazing site is located just north of Boulder, far enough from the brightest city lights to provide better views of the night sky while remaining only about a 10-minute drive from downtown Boulder.

The program takes place at an easily accessible public open-space trailhead with parking available near the observing area. No hiking is required.

Tour Price

The Boulder Night Sky Tour is $47 per person for the standard 2-hour group experience.

Your ticket includes the astronomy program, telescope viewing, equipment, chairs, red flashlights, snacks, water, and other amenities provided during the tour. There are no equipment rental fees or additional program charges.

Discounts

We want astronomy to be accessible to as many people as possible, so several discounts may be available.

Children ages 2-12 receive reduced pricing, and we periodically offer discounts for students, veterans, and other groups.

How to Book

Advance reservations are required.
